Will Marinette Ruin Kim and Ondine’s First Kiss? Analyzing the High Stakes of ‘Sleeping Syren’ (S6 E6)
If you are a devoted Miraculous fan like me, you probably gasped when you read the synopsis for Miraculous Season 6 Episode 6, ‘Sleeping Syren’. The official plot reveals that Ondine is worried about Kim’s true feelings and, crucially, that she still hasn’t had her first kiss with him. This is classic Miraculous drama, setting the stage for emotional turmoil. But the real high-stakes element here is Marinette: the synopsis confirms that she “decides to help her… in her own way!”. And if we know anything about Marinette’s attempts at playing matchmaker, it’s that her “help” almost always results in glorious, akumatization-inducing disaster.
I know Marinette means well, but frankly, her meddling is often what kicks off the very crises Ladybug has to resolve. This focus on Ondine and Kim’s milestone relationship moment is designed to hit fans right in the feels, but it also invites us to critically analyze Marinette’s behavior. We must ask whether this is just a sweet B-plot, or if Marinette, stressed beyond measure as the acting Guardian, is unconsciously trying to grab control of the chaos in her life by attempting to fix a simple social problem—only for it to blow up in her face and necessitate a spectacular superhero intervention.
The Kimdine History: From Oblivious Jock to Romantic Interest
To understand why Ondine’s anxiety is so high in Sleeping Syren, we must revisit the episode that introduced her: Syren (Season 2, Episode 14). That episode saw Ondine, a talented swimmer, akumatized into Syren because Kim failed to recognize her deep romantic feelings, ignoring a letter she had written for him. Syren’s rage at unrequited love led her to flood Paris, turning it into an underwater kingdom for her perceived “prince”.
Kim, unfortunately, has a history of emotional blindness. In fact, many fans have openly criticized him in the past for being an “absolute moron” or a “jerk” when it comes to relationships, such as the time he complained about Ondine breaking up with him while simultaneously praising other “hot chicks” to Marinette. The episode Sleeping Syren is already being called “Sleeping Siren 2.0” because the core conflict—Ondine’s anxiety over Kim’s genuine commitment—remains unresolved. Even though they are now established as a couple, the fact that Ondine still worries about Kim’s “true feelings” implies that the emotional neglect or ambiguity that caused her previous akumatization is still haunting her. This setup strongly suggests that the trauma of rejection or emotional neglect is still a highly accessible vulnerability for Monarch (or Lila) to exploit.
The Marinette Matchmaker Conundrum: When Helping Hurts
Marinette’s intention to help Ondine achieve her first kiss is sweet, but her track record as a matchmaker is, shall we say, checkered. Her previous attempts to manipulate social situations—especially those involving her own feelings or her friends’ love lives—have often led to chaos. Consider how obsessively she strategized in Gamer, or the ethical issues raised when a partner like Luka had to point out her unresolved feelings for Adrien.
The critical element here is that Marinette, as the Guardian of the Miraculous, is under immense stress due to the escalating war with Monarch and the schemes of Lila Rossi. For her, a high-stakes, life-or-death crisis is her normal. When she tries to solve something as comparatively simple as a first kiss dilemma, she tends to apply her “Ladybug” level of planning, which often overcomplicates matters. Her attempt to orchestrate a perfect moment for Kim and Ondine will likely pressure the couple, leading either to Kim rejecting the pressure thoughtlessly, or Ondine’s emotions swelling past her breaking point. This inadvertent pressure cooker is the most probable narrative mechanism the show will use to trigger the akumatization of Sleeping Syren.
Prediction: How the Kiss Quest Fails (And Ultimately Succeeds)
Based on the pattern of Miraculous, the first kiss will not happen under Marinette’s contrived scenario. Instead, the emotional trigger will activate Sleeping Syren, a powered-up version of the original villain who, as confirmed by trailers, creates dangerous “shark-faced water knights”.Kim will likely be endangered by the akuma’s attack—perhaps specifically because he is the object of her distress.
The true resolution will only arrive after Ladybug (in her impressive new form, Lady Dragon, which we’ll discuss in Blueprint 2) defeats the villain. Kim will be forced to confront the severity of Ondine’s emotional pain while under duress. This moment of crisis will compel him to realize his “true feelings” and communicate them sincerely, securing the kiss in a moment of genuine, high-emotion relief, rather than through Marinette’s clumsy orchestration.
If you ask me, this episode is going to be essential for Kim’s long-needed character development. What do you think Marinette’s disastrous “help” will look like? Drop your predictions for the Miraculous Season 6 Episode 6 Sleeping Syren below!
